Contact and support

Support for MTD Gateway is by email. We do not have a telephone helpline.

General support

Email support@mtdgateway.co.uk for help with the service: signing in, connecting to HMRC, importing a bank statement, categorising transactions, or anything that is not working as you expect.

To help us answer quickly, tell us:

  • the username on your account, but never your password
  • which business or client you were working on
  • what you were trying to do, and what happened instead
  • the exact wording of any error message
We will never ask you for your password, and we will never ask you to send us your Government Gateway sign-in details. If you get a message that appears to be from us and asks for either, do not reply to it. Forward it to the address above.

Problems with your tax, not the software

We cannot answer questions about how much tax you owe, whether an expense is allowable, or the state of your HMRC record. Those are for HMRC or for your accountant. We can help with anything to do with how this service behaves.

Reporting a security issue or a data breach

If you find a security weakness in this service, or you think your data or a client's data may have been exposed, tell us straight away.

Email support@mtdgateway.co.uk with SECURITY at the start of the subject line. That routes it to us as urgent rather than into the normal support queue.

Include as much as you can:

  • what you found, and the page or request where you found it
  • the steps to reproduce it
  • when you first noticed it
  • whether you believe any data was actually accessed

We investigate security reports promptly and will tell you what we have found. Where a breach affects data we hold for Making Tax Digital, we report it to HMRC and, where it meets the threshold, to the Information Commissioner's Office within 72 hours of becoming aware of it. We will also tell affected users directly where we are required to.

Please do not test for vulnerabilities against other people's accounts, and do not publish a weakness before we have had a chance to fix it.

Data protection requests

To get a copy of your data, export it, correct it, or have it deleted, email the same address with the username on your account. Our privacy policy explains what we hold and how long we keep it.
